About the position and key responsibilities

As a key member of the national team, the development director is a natural connector who is willing to partner closely with local executive directors and national executive team members to ensure we have the funding we need to secure big wins for kids. This person excels at development strategy, cultivating donors, prospecting, and securing gifts. This person is fantastic with systems, processes, procedures, and tools to ensure a smooth-running development shop that can handle dozens of requests at a time.

This person is a great writer who is able to bring clarity, inspiration, and persuasion to our proposals and reports. This person is a great manager and mentors two direct reports: the development associate and the grant manager. The development director position is remote, with travel to our state and national offices as well as conferences and events approximately 6-12 times a year. This person will have at least 5 years of development experience, with previous experience in education and advocacy fundraising preferred.

Key responsibilities include:

Oversee the development and execution of traditional fundraising efforts with campaign leaders and executive leadership

  • Maintain robust pipelines for both the 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 state and local programs.
  • Help diversify fundraising by supplementing our traditional strength in grants from foundations with more gifts from high-net-worth individuals.
  • Create and manage annual plans for meeting campaign and national fundraising targets and provide regular updates and analysis to 50CAN’s leadership team and local executive directors.
  • Coordinate with the finance team to ensure campaign budgets align with donor pipelines and renewals.
  • Maintain campaign pipelines and renewals using 50CAN’s moves management system, monitoring donor engagement and partnering with campaign leaders to meet individual and foundation donor priorities.
  • In partnership with the Grant Writing Manager, prospect for new donors as directed using prospect research software, public filings, and internal data.
  • Provide strategic guidance to executive directors to grow their pipelines and cultivate new donors.

Manage the development team and oversee processes and systems

  • Provide strong management and mentorship to the Development Associate and Grant Writing Manager, helping them grow in their roles and perform at a high level.
  • Partner with the development associate to track the movement of individual donors in our donor management system, ensure acknowledgment and reporting deadlines are met, and safeguard the integrity of fundraising data.
  • Plan and execute online fundraising appeals throughout the year, supporting campaign leaders to increase the number of small individual gifts received annually.
  • Develop cultivation and stewardship strategies for executive directors.
  • Become an authoritative, trusted voice for fundraising within the 50CAN network and with staff at foundations that support the organization.
  • Utilize internal 50CAN systems including DonorSearch, Bloomerang, Asana, and Google Workspace.

Draft and edit development materials

  • Work with the Grant Writing Manager to provide strategic guidance on all development materials, such as grant proposals, interim and final reports, blog posts, social media content, brochures, and other materials.
  • Gather, track and analyze campaign metrics data to present compelling narratives of our impact to funders and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure the quality of grant proposals and reports before they are submitted, through a consistent, high bar for all materials.

Create and execute online fundraising campaigns, including peer to peer campaigns, flash fundraising, social media sharing event, crowdfunding, donation matching drives, event integrated fundraisers, year-end giving, and other special appeals

  • Collaborate with the design, communications, development, state teams, and national leadership to optimize landing and donation pages and implement testing plans to improve performance and increase income.
  • Analyze data from website and Google analytics to improve fundraising campaigns.
  • Collaborate with development staff to develop reports to analyze and track the performance of the online giving program.
  • Other projects, as assigned.
