Since 2011, TennesseeCAN: The Tennessee Campaign for Achievement Now, a locally-led education nonprofit, has empowered local stakeholders—from community members to policymakers—to advocate for improved K-12 education policies that put Tennessee children first. TennesseeCAN is part of 50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now, a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address. We develop local education leaders by providing them with the research, tools and ideas needed to create learning environments that best meet every child’s needs. 50CAN operates campaigns in Connecticut, Delaware, Denver, Georgia, Hawaii, Miami, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Richmond and Tennessee and is led by CEO & Founder Marc Porter Magee.
As a key member of the TennesseeCAN team, the deputy director is responsible for managing relationships with partner organizations, as well as working with the executive director in leading the team to accomplish its strategic campaign goals. This position reports directly to the executive director.
Build, maintain, and sustain relationships with partner organizations, advocates, and stakeholders statewide
Identify and pursue potential partnership opportunities and track related metrics
Collaborate with executive director and 50CAN national team to craft, execute, and evaluate both advocacy and legislative strategy
Manage team members in coordination with executive director and provide support to staff
Manage and lead communications strategy with support from executive director
Prepare team goals and objectives and evaluate progress and effectiveness of all staff
Work in partnership with the 50CAN finance team for budgeting and forecasting against actuals to ensure financial sustainability
Oversee planning and execution of advocacy, partner, and team events
Collaborate with the executive director to create and lead board agendas
Key Skills, Abilities and Experiences
Bachelor’s degree. Degree in education/public policy and/or master’s degree preferred but not required
Passion for education reform
Strong belief that students’ educational needs should be prioritized
Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills
Development experience and expertise
Ability to travel statewide on a frequent basis
Commitment to 50CAN’s mission
Sense of humor, strong work ethic, “roll-up-your-sleeves” attitude and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done

Strong written and oral skills
Employee may be required to work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights
Communications background preferred but not required
