Founded in 2005, The Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now: ConnCAN has been instrumental in creating the political conditions and public will for common sense education policy changes to be implemented across the state of Connecticut. Through this work, ConnCAN has emerged as a leading voice for education reform, built a base of thousands of supporters across the state and secured dozens of policy wins including: the adoption of rigorous education standards, more flexibility to recruit great new teachers and a 50-percent increase in the number of students enrolled in public charter schools.

ConnCAN is a branch of 50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now, a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address. 50CAN helps develop local education leaders by providing them with the research, tools and ideas needed to create learning environments that best meet every child’s needs. 50CAN operates campaigns in Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, New Jersey, New Mexico, Tennessee and Miami, with affiliates in South Carolina, Denver and New York. It has a national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and is led by CEO & Founder Marc Porter Magee

About the job

The Policy and Research Director will lead major research projects, produce research materials, policy recommendations, and support policy analysis. This position reports to the Executive Director of ConnCAN.

Key responsibilities:

  • Produce clear, accessible and actionable research and research projects (reports, one pagers, etc.) and identify areas for new analysis
  • Conduct quick turnaround data analysis as well as detailed data and research analysis, including researching and summarizing laws, policies and research literature
  • Lead the development, fact-checking and copy-editing of advocacy and campaign-specific materials (legislation, one-pagers, research reports, and other materials)
  • Working with the Executive Director, develop the strategy – and work on all efforts and activities –to secure education policy wins
  • Track and report activities to ensure compliance with federal and state lobbying laws
  • Network and develop relationships with key state and community leaders, government officials, advocacy partners and other stakeholders

  • Commitment to 50CAN’s mission, sense of humor, strong work ethic, “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude, and willingness to do “whatever it takes”
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative and embrace a growth mindset
  • Ability to quickly gather and analyze research and information from various sources concisely and accurately with unwavering attention to detail
  • Ability to examine and translate data into action (knowledge of Excel), bring data and research to life and produce a high level of analysis
  • Strong project management, research and writing skills
  • Experience in and passion for advocacy
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of policy, research, education or relevant work experience
  • JD preferred but not required
