Public Affairs Manager

Founded in 2005, ConnCAN is leading a grassroots advocacy movement for great public schools—working to create the public will and political conditions for Connecticut to advance common-sense policy so every child in our state has equitable access to a life-changing education, regardless of their zip code, their family’s income or the color of their skin. ConnCAN is a branch of 50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now, a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address.


ConnCAN seeks a Public Affairs Manager to serve as the keystone for ConnCAN’s high-impact storytelling and community engagement strategy using a broad scope of traditional and digital tools to elevate our message in pursuit of great schools for all. The Public Affairs Manager will be responsible for capturing and telling the dynamic stories of ConnCAN’s growing body of advocates and policy campaigns. The position will report to ConnCAN’s Executive Director and collaborate on an on-going basis with 50CAN’s Director of Communications.

Key responsibilities

The Public Affairs Manager will lead the charge on all fronts of story-capture, storytelling and calls to action, ultimately responsible for shaping and amplifying the ConnCAN message in our work to drive common-sense policy change. Responsibilities include:

  • On-going Mailchimp campaign development, management and optimization of digital/email marketing strategies including, but not limited to: pre campaign analysis, on-going campaign management, testing for increased performance, post campaign analytics, learnings and recommendations for future campaigns.

  • Develop and manage online and social media content including day-to-day activities, marketing and campaigns.

  • Partner with ConnCAN team to source/create, curate and manage all published social media, E-Advocacy and web-based content (images, video and written) including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, CQ Engage and YouTube.

  • Support Director of Development with planning for online gift processing, donor records, donor data analysis and information retrieval from Salesforce (the creation of reports, queries, exports, etc.) and other donor support functions.

  • Help ensure consistency and relevancy of messages and brand across multiple media, continuous monitoring and coverage of all sites and tools and production of media analytic reports to perform short and long term performance and ROI analysis.

  • Source, curate, and publish relevant content to reach ConnCAN’s audiences including daily clips, a daily news round up of relevant educational content, E-newsletters and emails to ConnCAN’s base of supporters and advocates.

  • Identify challenges and opportunities in user-generated or other content surrounding ConnCAN and its efforts.

Key skills, abilities and experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Intellectual curiosity, commitment to social justice advocacy and a natural propensity for teamwork and networking.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, copy editing proficiency and a strong working knowledge of multimedia (including written, video and photography).

  • Minimum 3-to-5 years experience in relevant communications and marketing experience, including but not limited to journalism, public relations and political campaigns.

  • Experience sourcing, developing, publishing, and managing content.

  • Knowledge of Crowdskout or a comparable CRM, particularly on the backend and familiarity with associated third party applications.

  • Functional knowledge and/or experience with Mailchimp or similar tool.

  • Hands-on experience with website management and SEO, both organic and paid— including content tagging and copywriting strategies.

  • Google Analytics and AdWords certification desired.

  • Experience managing and executing online and social media initiatives that span owned (e.g. website), earned (e.g. Facebook) and paid (e.g. digital ads).

Candidates with Spanish language competency and graphic design experience are strongly preferred but not required.
